Brusilovsky, P. (2003), Adaptive navigation support in educational hypermedia: the role of student knowledge level and the case for meta-adaptation. British Journal of Educational Technology, 34: 487-497. https://doi.org/10.1111/1467-8535.00345

Peter Brusilovsky’s article discusses the concepts of educational hypermedia and how the enhancement of such could impact how knowledge students could glean from an activity using this technology. According to Brusilovsky, adaptive navigation support techniques can be used to assist users with different knowledge levels obtain information and learn if the most relevant adaption technologies are selected. However, the author also suggests that further research and study are necessary to help developers of this technology with making selections for users.

This article further explains several terms related to the subject such as direct guidance, sorting, hiding, annotation, and generation as being the most popular technologies to use in the field. The strengths of this article stem from the experiences that the author personally has in the field of adaptive hypermedia and navigation. He listed results from his own studies on this topic, some of which were not favorable. However, the conclusions drawn from these experiments seem to have helped reshape the author’s focus to some degree. He still concludes that although the potential for learning outcomes is present, the caliber of students, their levels of knowledge, and their interests all play an important role in the research outcome

Honestly, I was personally uncertain about the topics discussed in this article. I had never heard the term “educational hypermedia” before reading this article, therefore, I was forced to do a little more research to get a gist of the concepts. However, I feel that these challenges were necessary for me as a novice educational researcher. The exposure to some things that were out of my comfort zone was an excellent learning experience. Once I began the reading, I realized that every adaptive program that I have used in my classroom over the years could be improved to some degree with the use of this technology. In my own studies, I would like to explore and learn more about adaptive hypermedia and navigation support and their uses for education.
